R5: My website is a shifting house next
to a river of knowledge

Laurel Schwulst's advocates for individual websites over social media platforms because of the value of personal agency, creative expression, and control over one's presence when navigating the web. Social media platforms are business and while convenient for connecting people, place a large emphasis on making profit through advertising and engagement metrics. This is apparent on all popular platforms as users are bombarded with advertisements mixed in with the content they want to see. This can lead to a lack of user control, algorithm-driven content distribution, and a standardized presentation that limits individuality.

On the other hand, individual websites offer an opportunity for virtual self-expression and creativity without the underlying agenda of profit, guidelines, and format limitations. They provide a platform where individuals, particularly artists and creatives, can curate their own space, crafting it to reflect their unique identities, ideas, and works. With a website, individuals have more control over the design, content, and overall experience they wish to provide to their audience. This autonomy fosters a deeper connection between the creator and the audience, allowing for a more authentic and meaningful interaction.

Schwulst's stance echoes the idea that the web's diversity and richness depend on many individual contributions. By having personal websites, individuals become active participants in shaping the online landscape, contributing to a decentralized and diverse web rather than being confined within the structures and limitations of a select few social media platforms.

Websites as an Infinite. Everyday new and unique websites are being published, offering a seemingly infinite ocean of knowledge, entertainment and self expression. As technology develops websites are becoming more sophisticated and interactive creating a wide of user experiences. If growth is limitless and always continuing; I created a page representing this idea.
